Amy Hunt claims European 100m gold after Commonwealth silver disappointment

Amy Hunt has claimed European gold in the women's 100 meters, overcoming the disappointment of a silver medal at the recent Commonwealth Games. The British sprinter powered to victory at the European Athletics Championships with a winning time of 11.00 seconds.

She edged out Poland's Ewa Swoboda, who took silver in 11.02s, while Belgium's Delphine Nkansa secured bronze with 11.06s. Hunt, 24, expressed her strong desire for gold, stating, "I need to improve my performance this time because I'm tired of silver, so this victory is very special. I really wanted to change the color of the medal this time, and being able to do it here means a lot to me."

The race was considered open, with no single runner dominating the field leading up to the final. Geraldine di Tizio-Frey of Switzerland, the fastest European this season, finished fourth, and defending champion Dina Asher-Smith of Britain placed fifth.

Hunt's victory follows a season where she broke the 11-second barrier for the first time in June at the Stockholm Diamond League. Notably, she only began full-time training after completing her English degree at Cambridge University in 2023. She also holds the U18 world record in the 200m, set in 2019 with a time of 22.42s.
