ANC’s ‘Purge Without a Plan’ Could Create the Opposition It Fears

The African National Congress has removed more than 350 councillor candidates from its election lists just weeks before South Africa’s November 4 local government elections. The party cited vetting concerns, including criminal records and failures to meet qualification requirements.

The principle of vetting candidates is difficult to challenge. Parties should demand integrity, competence and credibility from the people they present to voters. But an election campaign is judged not only by whether a decision is right. Timing, execution and preparation for the political consequences matter just as much.

This was not merely a clean-up of names on a list. Each removed candidate may have been connected to a branch structure, activists, volunteers, community relationships, funders, family networks and voters who expected that person to represent them. Removing the candidate does not remove those networks. The question the ANC should have answered first is where that support will now go.

The timing also exposes a deeper organisational weakness. Serious problems should have been identified before candidates became embedded in branches, communities and campaign operations. The Electoral Commission of South Africa’s deadlines leave little room for candidates removed at this stage to challenge the decisions internally or reposition themselves elsewhere.

The ANC must now persuade communities to vote for it while explaining why people who campaigned under its banner are no longer considered suitable representatives. The party has chosen to perform major political surgery while trying to mobilise voters, creating confusion at the moment campaigns require clarity.
