Andean Community activates cooperation mechanisms after Colombia earthquake

The Andean Community (CAN) has activated its cooperation mechanisms to support Colombia after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the nation, claiming at least 71 lives. The CAN's General Secretariat announced the activation of these measures within the framework of the Andean Committee for Disaster Prevention and Response.

In a statement, the CAN conveyed its "deep solidarity with the people and Government of Colombia" following the seismic event, which caused significant loss of life and injuries. The South American bloc extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the swift recovery of the injured and all those affected by the "lamentable emergency."

The CAN highlighted Colombia's integral role within the bloc, stating that "the bonds of fraternity and solidarity that unite our peoples take on even greater significance" during times of hardship. The activation of cooperation mechanisms, it noted, reaffirms the unity and resilience of the member nations in the face of adversity.

The Colombian government declared a "national disaster" in response to the earthquake, which caused dozens of building collapses, particularly in the coffee-growing region and the southwest. The department of Risaralda reported the highest number of fatalities with 40, followed by Valle del Cauca with 27, and Chocó with four. Pereira, Cali, Manizales, Quibdó, and Armenia are experiencing the most critical situations, with widespread damage to infrastructure, including hospitals and transportation systems.
