Paraguay's Vice President sends solidarity to Colombia after devastating earthquake

Paraguay's Vice President Pedro Alliana has conveyed solidarity with Colombia after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the nation, causing significant damage and loss of life. The tremor, which occurred on August 10, 2026, was felt across a large part of Colombia, with authorities reporting damage in major cities including Bogotá, Cali, Popayán, Manizales, Armenia, Pereira, and Medellín.

The earthquake's epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, in the Chocó department on the Pacific coast, at a depth of 82 kilometers, according to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC). The quake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time (9:34 a.m. Paraguayan time). As of the latest reports, the death toll has risen to 71, with dozens more injured. The number of casualties is expected to increase as search and rescue operations continue.

However, the situation remains critical, particularly in the Chocó department, which is described as one of Colombia's poorest regions and ill-equipped to handle an emergency of this magnitude. Authorities are actively engaged in search, rescue, and damage assessment efforts in the affected areas.
