Britain's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, declared that he will consistently place the United Kingdom's interests first, even if it means publicly challenging allies like U.S. President Donald Trump. Responding to a BBC query, Burnham affirmed his commitment to national interests, stating, "All leaders have to do that. You have to defend your national interest before anything else. That is what you are required to do to do this job properly."

This stance marks a potential shift from the relationship his predecessor, Keir Starmer, had with Trump, which was characterized by tensions over issues like the Iran conflict, immigration, and energy policy. While Trump had previously labeled Burnham an "extreme liberal," he recently described their conversation as "very good."

The new Defense Secretary, Wes Streeting, noted that the timeline for achieving the spending increase falls under the Chancellor of the Exchequer's purview.
