Andy Lau becomes Doctor, HKBU president says AI can't replace him

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has bestowed an honorary Doctor of Letters degree upon the celebrated actor and singer Andy Lau, recognizing his significant contributions to the arts and society. The prestigious ceremony took place on August 10, with university officials, including Council Chairman Dr. Ambrose Wong and President Professor Wei Bingjiang, in attendance to honor Lau.

During the ceremony, Professor Wei lauded Lau's multifaceted talents and enduring charisma, describing him as a symbol of "excellence and perseverance." In a notable commendation, the university president remarked that in the current era of artificial intelligence, Andy Lau remains irreplaceable. Wei emphasized that AI cannot replicate Lau's "human warmth, talent, and the emotional connection he fosters with the Chinese community through his art."

Lau, a household name since his television debut in 1981, has built an illustrious career spanning over four decades. He has released more than 100 albums, achieving global sales of over 48 million copies, and holds a Guinness World Record for the most awards won by a Cantonese pop male artist. His filmography boasts over 160 movies, earning him multiple Best Actor awards, including three Hong Kong Film Awards and two Golden Horse Awards. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Lau established a production company in 1991 and has consistently engaged in extensive philanthropic work, supporting disaster relief, children's education, and individuals with disabilities.

Following the conferment ceremony, Lau engaged with over 700 HKBU students and faculty members in a "Heart-to-Heart Talk with Dr. Andy Lau" session. He was joined by acclaimed director Ann Hui, a fellow HKBU honorary doctorate recipient, with whom he shared insights from their long-standing collaborations and career journeys. The event provided valuable inspiration and a unique opportunity for students to interact with the esteemed artist and filmmaker.
