Animals Struggle for Survival After Crete Wildfire; Volunteers Battle Lack of Support

Amidst the devastation left by a massive wildfire in southern Rethymno, Crete, a less visible but equally critical battle is underway to save the animals that survived the inferno. Dozens of animals, suffering from burns, dehydration, and exhaustion, wander the scorched landscape searching for sustenance and care.

Firefighters, volunteers, and a dedicated veterinarian from Heraklion have provided initial aid to severely injured animals, including a sheep found in the mountainous area of Preveli. This animal was transported via 4x4 vehicle and received veterinary attention. However, rescuers report a significant lack of organized facilities to continue the treatment and recovery of these animals.

Volunteers express frustration that despite repeated calls, responsible municipalities have not established a dedicated center for the reception and care of fire-affected animals. Consequently, most animals are left in their natural environment after receiving first aid. Volunteers are forced to constantly move between areas to locate and assist new cases, while also leaving water and food supplies in various locations across the burnt land.

This ongoing effort highlights the power of solidarity but also underscores the urgent need for better coordination and organized support for animals impacted by such destructive events. The situation emphasizes a gap in official response, leaving the burden of care largely on the shoulders of dedicated individuals.
