Aniq delivers Malaysia's first gold, breaks two Games records

Mohamad Aniq Kasdan delivered Malaysia's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, dominating the men's 60kg weightlifting event. The 24-year-old athlete also shattered two Games records with a total lift of 273kg, achieved through 121kg in the snatch and 152kg in the clean & jerk.

Aniq's path to victory was not without challenge, as he was fiercely pushed by India's Rishikanta Singh throughout the competition. The snatch event saw both athletes achieve a best lift of 121kg, with Rishikanta initially holding the Games record due to lifting it earlier.

However, Aniq maintained his strong performance in the clean & jerk. After opening with a 145kg lift, he was in a prime position for gold. The opportunity arose when Rishikanta failed to complete a 148kg lift on his second attempt, allowing Aniq to take the lead with a 149kg lift. Rishikanta's final attempt at 151kg also failed, confirming the gold medal for Malaysia. Aniq concluded his impressive performance by lifting 152kg on his final clean & jerk attempt, breaking the event record and the overall record with his 273kg total.
