Ankara raises public transport fares by 14.30%

Public transportation fares in Ankara have seen another increase, with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) approving a 14.30% hike. This adjustment means a full ticket now costs 40 TL, up from 35 TL.

The ABB stated that the decision was driven by substantial rises in the basic cost components of public transport since January 2026. The price of diesel fuel per liter has climbed from approximately 50 TL to 80.90 TL. Additionally, spare parts costs for buses have risen by 31.90%, and mandatory traffic insurance premiums have increased by 54.73% during the same period.

Following the cost increases, student tickets have risen to 20 TL from 17.50 TL, and tickets for teachers are now 30 TL, up from 26 TL. Unlimited monthly passes for students have been set at 650 TL. These new fares are set to take effect on August 23, 2026.

Despite the fare increases, the municipality emphasized that free transportation services for families receiving social support will continue. As of August, this support benefits nearly 100,000 individuals, including approximately 40,000 students from these families who will continue to travel for free.
