Annual Michael Collins commemoration to take place in Cork

The annual commemoration of Irish revolutionary Michael Collins is set to take place at Béal na Bláth in County Cork, marking 104 years since his death during the Civil War. The ceremony, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Michael Collins Monument, will feature an oration by RTÉ Radio One presenter, author, and historian David McCullagh.

The event traditionally includes a procession to the monument, the laying of wreaths, a minute's silence, the National Anthem, and the main address. Collins, who served as Commander-in-Chief of the National Army, was ambushed and killed by anti-Treaty forces on August 22, 1922, while on an inspection tour in West Cork. He was 31 years old at the time of his death.

There are many different aspects to the life and career of Michael Collins; military organiser, intelligence chief, financial mastermind. But circumstances also turned him into a diplomat, a negotiator and a constitutional craftsman who played a key role, not just in the establishment of an independent Irish state, but in the evolution of Britain’s Empire into a Commonwealth.

David McCullagh expressed his honor at being invited to deliver this year's oration. He noted Collins' multifaceted role as a military organizer, intelligence chief, financial mastermind, diplomat, negotiator, and constitutional craftsman. McCullagh highlighted Collins' pivotal role in establishing an independent Irish state and influencing the evolution of Britain's Empire into the Commonwealth.

"As Ireland faces an increasingly turbulent international environment, it is timely to reflect on that legacy, and I am really looking forward to speaking at this year’s commemoration," McCullagh stated. Traffic restrictions are in place around Béal na Bláth, with the L2011 road closed and parking unavailable at the monument itself. Attendees are directed to designated parking areas located 900 meters from the site.
