Another severe downpour to hit Lithuania as forecasters warn of the heaviest rain

Summer warmth in Lithuania will give way to a cooler, wetter spell, with rain and thunderstorms expected through the week and temperatures falling further by the weekend.

Forecaster Teresė Kaunienė of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service said Tuesday would bring scattered cloud and local showers overnight. Rain was expected first in the east, then toward the coast and parts of Samogitia before dawn, with thunderstorms possible.

An active cold front will cross Lithuania on the first calendar day of autumn. Short, locally heavy showers are forecast across much of the country, with thunderstorms in many areas. Winds from the southwest and west could reach 8 to 13 meters per second, with gusts of 15 to 20 meters per second during storms.

In the evening, it will rain mostly in the eastern part of the country, and toward dawn on the coast and in some parts of Samogitia. There may also be thunder here.

Showers will continue on Wednesday and Thursday as cyclonic systems influence the weather. On Friday, a new cyclone arriving from the west is expected to bring heavy rain to many districts, with western Lithuania likely to receive the most precipitation. Temperatures will reach 17 to 22 C during the day.

Another small but active cyclone will arrive on Saturday, bringing widespread heavy rain overnight and intermittent showers during the day. Strong westerly winds and dangerous gusts are expected on the coast. Daytime temperatures will fall to 16 to 21 C, with similar conditions forecast for Sunday.

Temperatures at night will remain between 10 and 15 degrees, while during the day the air will warm only to 16 to 21 degrees.
