Meteorologist warns of hail, downpours and thunderstorms as unsettled cyclones reach Lithuania

Lithuania is heading into several days of unsettled weather as new cyclones move through the region, forecaster Elvyra Latvėnaitė says.

Cyclone Sina reached the Baltic region overnight into Monday, bringing light rain and isolated weak thunderstorms. Another system, named Tessa, is expected to arrive overnight into Tuesday with a wavy weather front and further rain and thunder.

The system of more unsettled and rainier cyclones over Northern Europe will keep filling with new vortices. Raphaela I and II, as well as the small cyclone Sina, are lined up there now.

Tuesday, which Lithuania celebrates as Sept. 1, will bring a cold atmospheric front across the country. Short periods of rain and thunderstorms are expected, with heavier rainfall possible in some areas during the day. Brief bursts of stronger rain and thunder, along with small hail, cannot be ruled out.

On Tuesday night, another cyclone named Tessa will reach us with a wavy atmospheric front. It will move fairly quickly toward the northeast, but it will also bring rain and thunderstorms.

The unsettled pattern is expected to continue from Wednesday. Rain will ease briefly at times, but wet conditions will remain common and thunderstorms may return. More frequent and heavier rain is expected in the second half of the week.

Temperatures will remain relatively mild at night, although nights will often be cloudy. Daytime temperatures may still reach 21°C to 26°C at the start of the week, but are forecast to fall to around 17°C to 22°C on Tuesday and 18°C to 23°C on Wednesday. Stronger southwesterly and westerly winds will become more common later in the week.

In some places, heavier rain and stronger thunder are possible during the day. Brief bursts of heavier rain and thunderstorms may occur, and small hailstones may fall in some areas.
