Another storm approaches Vilnius as heavy rain is forecast and services prepare

Vilnius is preparing for another spell of severe weather, with heavy rain expected around midnight and possible wind gusts of up to 18 meters per second. The city utility Grinda said the conditions could quickly create problems on streets and across the power network.

“Due to adverse weather conditions, temporary street flooding, fallen trees and branches, traffic disruptions and electricity supply interruptions are possible,” Grinda said. The company added that it was ready to respond quickly and asked residents to report flooded streets or fallen trees by calling 1355.

Rain is expected to weaken on Saturday, although forecasters predict showers in many areas, thunderstorms in some places and winds of 9 to 14 meters per second. Gusts could reach 15 to 20 meters per second across much of the country and up to 23 meters per second on the coast. Temperatures are forecast to range from 14 to 19 degrees Celsius during the day.

The latest warning comes two weeks after a powerful storm struck Lithuania on Aug. 22. Trees fell across many parts of the country, one person died and four were injured. The storm disrupted trains and public transport, disabled nine traffic lights on major roads and flooded Šilutė, where rainfall reached 93% of the monthly norm.

Authorities described that storm as the strongest Lithuania had seen in 20 years. More than 268,000 ESO customers lost power, while the electricity network recorded more than 11,000 incidents. Insurers registered nearly 14,000 claims, including more than 200 involving damaged vehicles, and estimated total losses at over 13 million euros. The government declared a state-level emergency because of the storm’s effects and farmers’ losses.
