Anti-Crypto Fight: Yaoundé and Washington Tighten Ranks

Yaoundé and Washington are intensifying their fight against the illicit use of cryptocurrencies. On August 11-12, 2026, a joint seminar organized by the US military contingent in Yaoundé and Cameroon's Ministry of Defense focused on combating the digital currency's role in criminal activities.

The seminar's primary objective was to equip Cameroonian forces with the necessary tools to counter criminal and terrorist networks that exploit cryptocurrencies. The two-day event brought together American experts from the FBI, DEA, AFRICOM's Counter Drug Element, and Counter Threat Finance division. They collaborated with Cameroonian law enforcement and military officials.

Discussions centered on tracing illicit transactions, dismantling terrorist financing schemes, and combating transnational criminal networks that use digital assets for money laundering. For the United States, this cooperation underscores a "continuous commitment" to supporting Cameroon. The initiative aims to enhance capabilities, share expertise, and strengthen efforts against evolving financial crime in the digital age.
