Antisemitic Hate Crimes Soar in Britain

The number of antisemitic incidents in Britain has risen sharply in the first half of the year, according to the Jewish organization Community Security Trust (CST). The CST, which advises Britain's approximately 280,000 Jews on security matters, registered 1926 hate crimes targeting Jews between January and June. This represents a 21% increase compared to the same period last year, making it the second-highest number ever recorded for the first half of a year.

"These attacks are directed at British Jews, but they are also attacks on Britain and our society," said Mark Gardner, CST's chief executive, as reported by AFP. The organization notes a significant rise in antisemitic incidents following the commencement of the US and Israeli war against Iran in February. British authorities have accused Iran's government of using proxies to carry out attacks in Britain and across Europe, allegations that Iran has consistently denied.

Recent incidents include the arson of four ambulances belonging to the Jewish ambulance service Hatzalah in March. The vehicles were parked near a synagogue in the Golders Green area of London, a neighborhood with a large Jewish population. In April, two Jewish individuals were stabbed on a street in the same North London area, an incident the police are investigating as a terrorist attack.

These numerous attacks have instilled fear within the Jewish community in Britain. Last year, two Jewish individuals were killed in an attack at a synagogue in Manchester. In response to the escalating concerns, the British government announced in July that it would allocate £250 million (nearly $315 million) over the next three years to enhance the protection of Jewish communities. This funding will include deploying additional police officers to safeguard schools and synagogues.
