APPU passes Taiwan's proposals; Taipei willing to join international mechanisms

Taiwan successfully saw three of its proposals adopted by the Asian Pacific Parliamentarians Union (APPU) at its recent conference. Vice President of Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, Chiang Chi-chen, led a cross-party delegation to the event, emphasizing Taiwan's readiness to engage in international cooperation.

During the conference, the APPU passed resolutions including Taiwan's proposals on fostering democratic and resilient supply chains, enhancing food supply chain resilience, and integrating marine waste management into regional supply chain policies. Taiwan also seeks substantive participation in international marine environmental conferences to deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minoru Kiihara, attended the closing ceremony to thank member nations for their active participation. The APPU also announced that Palau will host the 55th APPU conference and 88th Council meeting in 2025.

Following the conference, the Taiwanese delegation met with Japanese Liberal Democratic Party officials, including General Affairs Chairman Arimitsu Haruko. The meetings highlighted the strong ties between Taiwan and Japan, particularly in the face of rising geopolitical tensions, and underscored the importance of parliamentary exchanges in strengthening bilateral relations. Discussions also touched upon economic cooperation, including Taiwan's investments in Japan's semiconductor industry.
