Archbishop and Cathedral Pastor Reach Agreement: Toni Faber to Retire in 2027

Toni Faber, Austria's most prominent priest, will retire on September 1, 2027, a decision finalized after months of talks between Archbishop Josef Grünwidl and the well-known pastor. Faber, who will turn 65 in March, stated he is at peace with the arrangement and sees his early retirement as a chance to pursue other activities.

While many priests in the Archdiocese face delayed retirements due to staff shortages, Faber's departure comes after significant public attention and criticism. He had drawn scrutiny for frequent public appearances alongside his self-described "good friend" Natalie Nemec, and for comments suggesting the celibacy vow is "completely overrated" and a "flexible term."

Sources indicate that Archbishop Grünwidl, who is only slightly younger than Faber, faced considerable pressure since taking office. Pope's ambassador to Austria, Nuncio Archbishop Pedro López Quintana, reportedly urged a resolution regarding Faber. Faber, in a letter to his staff, expressed surprise at Grünwidl's suggestion for his retirement, which came amidst the media storm surrounding his lifestyle.
