Area Around Jeondeungsa Temple on Ganghwa's Jeongjoksan Mountain to Become National Natural Heritage Site

The area surrounding Jeondeungsa Temple on Jeongjoksan Mountain in Ganghwa, a location marked by significant historical events, is set to be designated a national natural heritage site.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced its intention to designate 'The Area of Jeondeungsa Temple on Jeongjoksan Mountain in Ganghwa' as a scenic spot. The administration recognized the area's high value as a historical and cultural landscape, noting the harmonious integration of Jeongjoksan Mountain's natural topography with historical elements such as Samrangseong Fortress, Jeondeungsa Temple, Jeongjoksan Royal Archives, temple forests, and ancient paths.

'The Area of Jeondeungsa Temple on Jeongjoksan Mountain in Ganghwa' will be designated as a scenic spot.

This region holds deep historical significance, having served as a temporary palace site during the Goryeo Dynasty, a venue for national Buddhist ceremonies, a repository for royal archives and genealogies during the Joseon Dynasty, and a battlefield where Korean forces achieved victory during the Byeongin yangyo conflict. The historical and scenic importance of Jeongjoksan Mountain and Jeondeungsa Temple is further evidenced by their appearance in historical texts like 'Goryeosa' and 'Annals of the Joseon Dynasty,' as well as in old maps such as 'Ganghwajeondo.'

The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to finalize the designation after a 30-day public comment period and deliberation by the National Heritage Committee.
