Argentina begins planning for the post-Messi era as inevitable renewal approaches

Lionel Messi’s departure from Argentina’s national team has closed one of the defining chapters in the Albiceleste’s history. After more than two decades wearing Argentina’s colors, the 39-year-old decided to end his international career following the team’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

The announcement has left Argentina facing a renewal filled with questions. A new captain and a new wearer of the No. 10 shirt must be chosen, while several established players could also leave. Leandro Paredes, 32, has already cast doubt on his future, saying Messi’s absence carries major weight for a group built around the captain’s leadership.

Nicolás Otamendi had announced before the World Cup that the tournament would be his final appearance for Argentina. Nicolás Tagliafico, Rodrigo De Paul and goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez are also among the players whose futures remain uncertain. The largest question concerns coach Lionel Scaloni, whose contract expires at the end of the year. After the final defeat, Scaloni said he would take time to consider his next decision.

The uncertainty has fueled speculation over possible replacements for Scaloni and candidates to inherit Messi’s armband and No. 10 shirt. Cristian Romero is one of the strongest options for captain after serving as a defensive pillar and wearing the armband during Messi’s previous absences. Tagliafico and Martínez have also captained the team.

Some voices have called for the No. 10 shirt to be retired in Messi’s honor, but it is expected to go to a new team reference instead. Lautaro Martínez is one possibility, having worn No. 10 for Inter Milan.
