Argentina issues yellow alerts for extreme cold, snow, and wind

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a series of yellow alerts for extreme cold, snow, and wind affecting 15 provinces on Sunday, August 9. These warnings signal the potential for weather phenomena that could disrupt daily life and pose risks.

The extreme cold alert covers a wide area, including Buenos Aires, Tucumán, parts of Catamarca, Corrientes, Córdoba, La Rioja, San Juan, San Luis, Mendoza, La Pampa, Neuquén, Río Negro, and Santa Cruz. The SMN emphasizes that these temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Residents are advised to limit prolonged exposure to the cold, dress in layers, and ensure homes are safely heated.

Yellow alerts for snow are in effect for southern Mendoza and northwestern Neuquén, where 15 to 25 centimeters of snow are expected, possibly more in some areas. The SMN recommends avoiding travel and, if necessary, using appropriate vehicles. Checking roofs and drainage systems, ventilating homes to prevent carbon monoxide buildup, and preparing emergency kits are also advised.

Strong winds are forecast for western La Rioja and Catamarca, with speeds of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour and gusts over 100 kilometers per hour. Similar warnings for Zonda wind, with speeds of 30 to 45 kilometers per hour and gusts over 70 kilometers per hour, are in place for parts of Catamarca, Salta, and Tucumán. For high winds, the public is urged to secure outdoor objects, stay away from windows, and exercise caution while driving.
