Argentina moves 10 medications to over-the-counter status

Argentina's National Administration of Medicines, Foods, and Medical Technology (Anmat) has authorized the sale of ten previously prescription-only medications without a doctor's order. This change, formalized through Disposition 4714/2026 and published in the Official Bulletin, affects all registered medicines that meet specific composition and presentation criteria.

Anmat based its decision on a thorough evaluation, noting that these drugs have been available by prescription for at least five years without significant adverse event reports. The agency also considered international regulatory precedents from Europe, Spain, France, the United States, Brazil, and Colombia, where similar medications are already sold over-the-counter.

The evaluation confirmed that these medicines have a low risk of dose-related adverse reactions and a very low risk of serious events unrelated to dosage. They possess a wide therapeutic margin, though their use will be limited to approved indications and dosages. A key consequence for consumers is that these medications will no longer receive discounts from social security programs or private health insurers.
