Argentina players face FIFA investigation over World Cup final altercation with Spain

FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against a number of Argentina players for their conduct after their World Cup final loss to Spain. The world governing body announced Wednesday that several players and staff members confronted their Spanish counterparts following the final whistle.

The incidents occurred after Spain secured a 1-0 victory in extra time. Argentina players, including Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and Leandro Paredes, along with official Roberto Ayala, were reportedly involved. Spain's Pablo Martin Paez Gavira was also mentioned in relation to the altercations.

Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against these individuals, with potential charges ranging from assault to unsporting behavior. FIFA is also investigating a separate incident where Argentina players displayed a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" after their semi-final win against England.

The investigations will examine potential breaches of FIFA's rules concerning non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, discrimination, racist abuse, and match security protocols. This includes addressing discriminatory chants, late kick-offs, and the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators.
