Argentina: Presidential Elections Set for October 2027

Argentines are set to vote for president on October 24, 2027, as mandated by the nation's electoral law. This date marks the general election, which will also include votes for vice president, a substantial portion of the National Congress, and numerous provincial and local leadership positions.

The upcoming elections will see the selection of 130 national deputies and 24 senators. Beyond federal offices, voters in 21 provinces will choose their governors, and the head of government for the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires will also be elected. Additionally, mayors and various local authorities will be chosen across the country, completing a comprehensive electoral cycle.

A significant political debate currently surrounds the future of the PASO, or Mandatory Open Primaries. The ruling party aims to abolish this system, which serves as a preliminary election to select candidates. However, enacting such a change requires amending the National Constitution, a process demanding the support of an absolute majority in Congress – specifically, half plus one of all members, translating to 37 senators.

Currently, the ruling party holds 21 senators favorable to the reform, indicating a substantial gap. They need to persuade an additional 16 senators from other political factions to achieve the necessary majority. The National Electoral Chamber (CNE) will provide a platform for voters to consult their polling locations closer to the election date, accessible via the CNE's official website using their national identity document.
