Argentine Chief of Staff admits hiding half a million dollars from asset declaration

Argentina's Chief of Staff, Manuel Adorni, has admitted to omitting around $500,000 from his official asset declarations, a confession made during an interview after a judicial investigation into alleged illicit enrichment began. Adorni stated that these undeclared funds represented savings accumulated with his wife from their private sector work and cryptocurrency investments, which they had kept "off the books."

Adorni submitted rectifying declarations for 2023, 2024, and 2025 to the Argentine Anti-Corruption Office more than three months after the investigation commenced. He explained that the undeclared assets originated from savings built up over years in the private sector and profits from Bitcoin investments made between 2014 and 2018, where he claimed they invested $200,000 and gained $300,000.

"The mea culpa I make is for having carried forward an unintentional error, and I will pay everything that is due," Adorni stated, promising to regularize any tax obligations stemming from the revised declarations. He also addressed the ownership of a property in an exclusive neighborhood, which was registered solely under his wife's name and had not been reflected in previous declarations.

These admissions starkly contrast with Adorni's prior statements to Congress and the press. On April 29, he asserted in a legislative appearance that his declarations included "all the details of the assets" comprising his wealth and that "there was never any concealment." Similarly, on March 25, he assured journalists that "everything that should be declared is declared in each of the agencies as appropriate."
