Poland seeks transparent investigation into activist's death in Ecuador

Poland is demanding a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of Polish activist Mónika Silva, who was found dead in her home in Montañita, Ecuador. Silva was known for denouncing alleged corruption cases in the coastal province of Santa Elena.

In a statement, the Polish Embassy in Peru, which also covers Ecuador, conveyed its "deep sadness" over Silva's death. The embassy urged Ecuadorian authorities to conduct a "prompt, impartial, independent, and transparent" inquiry to fully clarify the circumstances of her passing and ensure accountability under the law.

We trust that the investigation will allow us to fully determine the circumstances of this event and ensure that responsibilities are assumed in accordance with the law.

The Polish mission also emphasized the critical importance of protecting human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society activists. It stated that providing safe conditions for civic engagement and the exercise of fundamental rights and civil liberties is an essential obligation of any rule of law.

Ecuador's Interior Minister, John Reimberg, indicated that investigations have begun and the autopsy results are pending. He suggested that authorities are leaning towards the possibility of suicide, citing preliminary findings at the scene. However, the Polish government's call for a comprehensive investigation underscores its desire for certainty and justice in this case. The Polish consul in Ecuador is actively working to secure the safety of Silva's minor children and remains in close contact with local and national authorities.
