Argentine lawmaker seeks impeachment of President Milei over Brazil diplomatic spat

Argentine legislator Marcela Pagano has initiated impeachment proceedings against President Javier Milei, citing "poor performance" in managing diplomatic ties with Brazil. The move follows Milei's critical remarks about Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during a visit to São Paulo on July 25, where he also expressed support for Flavio Bolsonaro.

Pagano formally submitted the impeachment request to the lower house of Congress. The complaint outlines four specific charges against the president: deliberate damage to Argentina's foreign relations, intervention in a foreign state's internal electoral process in violation of non-intervention principles, jeopardizing the country's economic and productive interests, and unsuitability for the presidential office.

I come to promote impeachment against the President of the Nation, Javier Gerardo Milei, for the cause of poor performance provided for in Article 53 of the National Constitution, due to his conduct on July 25, 2026, in the city of São Paulo, Federative Republic of Brazil, and for the line of conduct of which that episode constitutes the culmination.

The diplomatic crisis escalated after Milei referred to Lula as a "convict" and a "thief" during a speech in São Paulo. This led to an immediate and severe reaction from Brazil, with its Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoning its ambassador from Buenos Aires for consultations. This diplomatic measure is considered the most serious form of protest short of downgrading relations and the most drastic taken by Brazil against Argentina in decades.

Pagano argued that Milei's actions were not isolated incidents but the culmination of a sustained pattern of behavior, including previous insults directed at Lula and a systematic avoidance of bilateral meetings. The legislator also noted that Milei called Alexandre de Moraes, a justice on Brazil's Supreme Federal Court and a key figure in the investigation against former President Jair Bolsonaro, a "bald garbage."
