Argentine Officer Critically Wounded in Shootout with Repeat Offender

Sub-lieutenant Maximiliano López, a member of the Luján Patrol Command, is fighting for his life after being shot twice by a repeat offender. López sustained a fractured femur in his left leg and a critical injury to his neck, with one projectile lodging just 1.5 centimeters from his spinal cord. A third shot struck his bulletproof vest, likely preventing a fatal outcome. He was initially stabilized at Hospital Nuestra Señora de Luján before being transferred to Clínica Fitz Roy in Buenos Aires due to the severity of his injuries. His condition has since worsened, requiring intubation and intensive care. The projectile's proximity to his trachea and cervical spine has medical professionals on high alert. The incident occurred when police attempted to identify occupants of a motorcycle in the Fonavi neighborhood. The suspects fled, leading to a brief pursuit. After being intercepted, the driver, identified as Carlos Daniel Jara, drew a revolver and fired at the officers. Jara, 34, with a significant criminal record, was apprehended shortly after hiding in a nearby backyard. He also sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange and is under police guard at a local hospital. Investigators seized a revolver as evidence. The case is being handled by Prosecutor's Office No. 10 of the Mercedes Judicial Department.
