Army rescues nine kidnapped victims, foil terrorist attacks in Niger

Nigerian Army troops have conducted successful operations in Niger State, rescuing nine kidnapped victims and thwarting terrorist activities. The operations, which took place in Mariga and Rijau Local Government Areas, also led to the recovery of stolen livestock and weapons.

In one operation on August 12, troops deployed at Kotonkoro rescued nine kidnapped individuals. These victims were later handed over to local authorities for reunification with their families. On the same day, troops on patrol in the Warari area of Rijau LGA encountered and cleared a terrorist ambush. During this engagement, seven motorcycles, one camel, 47 cattle, and 18 sheep, suspected to be rustled, were recovered.

Further operations on August 10 saw troops foil an attempted terrorist attack and infiltration of communities near Inana Village, Majal, and Tunga Bisallah in Rijau LGA. After sighting the troops, terrorists on motorcycles fled towards a forest, abandoning their equipment. The troops engaged the fleeing attackers, recovering one AK-47 rifle, an empty magazine, and ammunition. Six motorcycles were destroyed, and one was recovered.

The commander of the 18 Brigade commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism. He emphasized the importance of sustained operational tempo, vigilance, and leveraging credible information from local communities to disrupt criminal activities and deny terrorists freedom of action. These successes highlight the commitment of the Nigerian Army to combating terrorism and other criminal elements within the state.
