NATO jets shoot down drone in Latvian airspace

NATO fighter jets successfully shot down a drone that had entered Latvian airspace, according to confirmation from the country's defense ministry on Friday. The ministry stated the drone's entry was a result of Russian electromagnetic warfare, adding that the threat had been neutralized. The armed forces confirmed the successful destruction of the unmanned aerial vehicle within the NATO member state's airspace.

The interception comes at a time of heightened concern across Europe regarding unauthorized drone activity, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has surpassed four years. Latvia, a European Union and NATO member with a population of approximately 1.9 million, shares a border with Russia to its east. Hours after the Latvian incident, the governor of Russia's northwestern Leningrad region reported that air defenses had shot down 54 Ukrainian drones. Aleksandr Drozdenko stated that a fire broke out at the Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga following the attack. This follows a similar event on Monday when French fighter jets, deployed as part of NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission, shot down a drone over Latvia, marking the first instance of the alliance's rapid-reaction force downing a stray drone in Latvian airspace. German authorities also recently discovered an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig airport, and operations at Hanover airport were disrupted by a drone entering restricted airspace.
