Around 1,400 ESO customers in Lithuania remain without power

Two weeks after a storm devastated parts of Lithuania, about 1,400 customers of the Electricity Distribution Operator, known as ESO, remained without power on Sunday.

The most difficult conditions persisted in the Utena region and in the municipalities of Zarasai, Anykščiai, Visaginas and Radviliškis, LRT radio reported. ESO has increased compensation for residents’ direct losses caused by the storm.

The maximum payment will depend on how long it took to restore electricity. Residents whose service returned after three to six days can receive up to 220 euros. Those who waited seven to 13 days can receive up to 440 euros, while outages lasting 14 days or longer qualify for up to 660 euros. The first compensation payments are due to reach residents on Monday.

Insurers have registered nearly 14,000 claims linked to the storm, with total assessed damage exceeding 13 million euros. The storm that hit Lithuania on Aug. 22 brought down trees in many parts of the country, killed one person and injured four others. At its peak, more than 268,000 ESO customers lost power, and the electricity network recorded more than 11,000 faults. The government declared a national-level emergency over the storm’s effects and farmers’ losses.
