Artificial Intelligence Cannot Replace Humans

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is increasingly integral to global life, especially for younger generations immersed in the digital era. For many, life without AI is now unimaginable, yet a concerning trend of misuse and blind faith in its capabilities is emerging. Some believe AI possesses all knowledge, making it their sole reference point for answers.

This growing dependence has sparked widespread concern about potential threats, including cognitive colonization, fraud, the dissemination of false information, and perception manipulation. Furthermore, an overreliance on AI can significantly diminish an individual's capacity for critical and wise thinking. We are at a critical juncture where decisive action is needed to prevent the situation from worsening. Parents and authorities must act proactively.

The paradigm shift driven by AI in how information is sought, accessed, and reasoned about was a central theme at the recent Wikimania 2026 conference in Paris. As Wikipedia celebrated its 25th anniversary, a stark reality emerged: many individuals are more inclined to consult AI summaries than to engage in deep reading for understanding. This inclination is problematic because AI-generated information is not inherently accurate. Consequently, AI should not be treated as a definitive source of knowledge, a reliable reference, or a place for advice.

Unfortunately, many exploit AI as an easy shortcut to complete tasks without diligent effort. This has led to public sensitivity and criticism towards those suspected of using AI for creating logos, designs, writings, or music. The recent controversy surrounding the SEA Games 2027 mascot design, criticized for lacking local elements and a distinct identity, exemplifies this sentiment. Critics claimed the design was AI-generated, leading to condemnation of the ministry involved. Negative sentiments regarding AI misuse were also openly expressed by delegates at the Wikimania conference, as noted by Wikimedia Foundation CEO Bernadette Meehan in her opening address.
