Artist Azmatul Hazrin Preserves Heritage Through Cyanotype Visuals

In the exhibition 'Seutas Benang' (A Thread) at KL City Art Gallery, where most artists showcase works centered on thread embroidery, Azmatul Hazrin Abd Kadir Pahirulzaman offers a distinct approach. This artist from Kampung Gajah, Perak, utilizes the analog sun print technique, specifically cyanotype photography, as his medium to convey symbolic and poetic messages about heritage, human connection, and the journey of life.

Hazrin perceives heritage not merely as tangible assets passed down through generations, but as encompassing the values, memories, and relationships that shape human lives. He also recognizes that heritage can become a source of contention if not managed properly. "Heritage is not what we leave behind, but how we leave it for future generations," he explained. "In issues of heritage, disputes sometimes occur, leading to tears and division. Therefore, I use images like symbols of eyes and tears to depict the emotions present in this work."

Each element in his artwork carries symbolic meaning, inviting viewers to interpret the pieces based on their own experiences. "My artwork is more about symbolism. It's not just a picture, but has layers of meaning like poetry," Hazrin stated. "I don't want to display things directly. Instead, I try to educate viewers to look, think, and interpret each symbol based on their experiences."

He differentiates fine art photography from conventional photography, which prioritizes visual aesthetics. Hazrin's fine art photography serves as a platform for subtly conveying messages and social critiques on issues relevant to society. "Where there is a community, there are issues of heritage. The creation process itself is demanding. Hazrin's chosen cyanotype technique requires exposure to sunlight to transfer images onto canvas. He emphasizes the meticulous attention needed, as the entire process is dependent on weather conditions, light intensity, and the use of chemicals. "After the canvas is coated with chemicals, I have to wait until it's completely dry before it can be exposed to sunlight," he said. "I also need to check the sky and cloud conditions first. If the weather isn't suitable, I have to postpone the process. The canvas, once coated with chemicals..."
