AS Roma secures Champions League ticket with win over Hellas Verona

AS Roma clinched a coveted Champions League berth, finishing third in Italy's Serie A after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over already-relegated Hellas Verona on the final matchday. The win, secured at the Stadio Marc Antonio Bentegodi, saw goals from Donyell Malen and Stephan El Shaarawy cap off Roma's season, ensuring their place among Europe's elite clubs.

Despite facing a team at the bottom of the league, Roma did not immediately dominate. Their first significant chance came in the 34th minute with a free-kick from Paulo Dybala, which was saved by Verona's goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo. Verona also posed a threat before halftime, but Roma's goalkeeper Mile Svilar made a crucial save.

The game shifted in the second half when Verona's Nicolas Valentini received a second yellow card for a foul on Dybala, reducing the home side to 10 men. This numerical advantage allowed Roma to press harder. Although Montipo continued to deny Roma, the deadlock was broken in the 55th minute via a penalty. After a VAR review, the referee determined that Kieron Bowie had committed a handball in the box.

Malen's penalty attempt was initially saved by Montipo, but the rebound fell to Dybala, who set up Malen to score the opening goal. Roma controlled the game thereafter, with Dybala's subsequent efforts being thwarted by Montipo. The second goal arrived in injury time, with El Shaarawy converting a pass from Dybala to seal the 2-0 victory. This goal marked an emotional moment for El Shaarawy, who played his final match for the Giallorossi.
