ASJ urges National Congress to speed up consensus for approval of energy reforms

Edgar Aguilar, an energy specialist with the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ), has called on Honduras's National Congress to expedite the discussion and approval of reforms to the electricity subsector. Aguilar emphasized that these reforms are a key project for guaranteeing the stability and sustainability of the nation's energy system.

Aguilar expressed hope that legislative discussions will proceed diligently, fostering dialogue among political parties to reach consensus quickly. He stressed the importance of incorporating modifications that genuinely strengthen regulations and address national needs. Honduras requires a robust electricity market with independent regulatory and operational bodies, alongside a strengthened National Electric Energy Company (ENEE).

The expert warned that further delays in these reforms are unacceptable, as Honduras needs significant investments to expand transmission lines, add new generation capacity to address an estimated 400-megawatt deficit, and reduce economic losses. These losses currently amount to millions of lempiras annually, funds that could be redirected to critical areas like health, education, and infrastructure. Aguilar urged political parties to prioritize national interests over particular agendas to develop legislation that drives the sector's development.
