Asunción Mayoral Candidate Promises PMT Reform, Tackles Corruption Allegations at Mercado 4

Soledad Núñez, a candidate for the mayorship of Asunción, Paraguay, has pledged to reform the Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) and address alleged corruption within the municipal administration. During a meeting with workers at Mercado 4, Núñez heard firsthand accounts of perceived corruption among PMT agents and complaints about high taxes coupled with inadequate basic services.

The merchants described a chaotic and neglected environment, feeling abandoned by a municipal administration that has been led by the "cartismo" faction for seven years. The current interim mayor, Luis Bello, is completing the term of Oscar “Nenecho” Rodríguez, who faces charges for embezzlement but previously had the support of the "cartismo" bloc until his resignation. The "cartismo" candidate for the upcoming election is Camilo Pérez.

The problem is that there is no political will to solve.

Núñez stated that the core issue is a "lack of political will to solve" the problems. If elected, she promised a "profound change," including the reform of the entire PMT. "We are going to reform the entire PMT and have a direct complaint channel. Whoever is not fulfilling their mission will be removed," she warned, emphasizing that the PMT's role should be to facilitate traffic flow and promote road safety education.

In addition to addressing issues at Mercado 4, Núñez also visited the San Cristóbal neighborhood. Residents there highlighted problems such as deteriorating streets and sidewalks, numerous potholes, deficiencies in waste collection leading to garbage accumulation, and concerns about public insecurity. Núñez committed to tackling these issues if she assumes office.
