Milei to meet Flávio Bolsonaro during Brazil visit this week

Argentine President Javier Milei is scheduled to visit São Paulo, Brazil, this Saturday for a series of meetings and to receive a state honor. During his visit, Milei will meet with Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and Mayor Ricardo Nunes. He is also slated to receive the Order of Ipiranga, the highest distinction awarded by the state of São Paulo.

A key part of Milei's agenda includes a working meeting with Governor De Freitas, Mayor Nunes, and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The discussions are expected to cover bilateral issues. Following this, Milei will attend the Liberal Party's convention, where Senator Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, is set to officially announce his presidential candidacy. Bolsonaro's campaign has reportedly lost momentum against incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

This visit takes place against a backdrop of a contentious relationship between Milei and Lula da Silva since the former's government began in late 2023. Milei has openly expressed support for the Bolsonaro family, particularly Jair Bolsonaro, who has been convicted in Brazil for attempting a coup d'état.

Recently, Brazil's Supreme Court denied a request from Jair Bolsonaro's lawyers that would have allowed Milei to visit the former president, who is currently under house arrest. The decision was made by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, overseeing Bolsonaro's 27-year sentence for leading a coup plot against Lula da Silva after the 2022 election loss.
