ASUU declares indefinite strike at Plateau university over unpaid arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Plateau State University, Bokkos, has initiated a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike. This action follows the university administration's alleged failure to satisfactorily address the union's six-point charter of demands.

The strike was announced on Wednesday after a congress meeting, concluding a 14-day ultimatum issued on August 11. According to a statement signed by Chairperson Vincent D. Choji and Secretary Lomka Kopdiya, the union's demands remained unresolved despite the ultimatum's expiration.

Central to the dispute are issues such as the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme and the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement. The union is also demanding the payment of arrears from January 1, 2026, and specifically, 22 months' worth of arrears for the 25/35 percent wage award.

Beyond financial and contractual matters, ASUU's demands extend to the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university's perimeter fence. The union also called for an end to what it described as the intimidation of union leaders. The congress concluded that the substance of their demands had not been met, leading to the resolution to proceed with the strike, directing all members to suspend academic activities until further notice.
