ASUU shuts down IMSU, begins indefinite strike

The Imo State University (IMSU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite and total strike, halting all academic activities. The union cites the alleged non-payment of salaries, promotion arrears, and other entitlements as the reasons for industrial action.

ASUU-IMSU announced the strike on Monday, August 10, 2026, stating it will continue until their demands are met. The union claims the Imo State Government has failed to implement a December 23, 2025, agreement signed between the Federal Government and ASUU concerning improved welfare and service conditions for academic staff in public universities. This agreement, they note, has been implemented in universities in Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, and Sokoto states.

While implementation has commenced in some state-owned universities, including those owned by Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Osun and Sokoto states, it is saddening that such has not happened in IMSU despite repeated engagements with our university administration.

Further grievances include the alleged non-payment of several months' salaries for some members, unpaid promotion arrears dating back to 2016, and the withholding of 21 months' check-off dues. ASUU-IMSU also criticizes the continued inclusion of the university in the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which they argue erodes university autonomy. The union recalled a previous strike in 2024 over similar issues, which was suspended based on assurances from the university management.

ASUU-IMSU is urging the Imo State Government to direct the immediate implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement at the university. They have also appealed to traditional rulers, religious institutions, civil society organizations, parents, and student unions to intervene. While committed to dialogue, the union stressed that its willingness to resolve the dispute peacefully should not be mistaken for acceptance of the alleged denial of members' welfare rights.

ASUU-IMSU has therefore today, 10th August, 2026 embarked on a total and indefinite strike and vows never to return to work until the agreement is fully implemented.
