ASVEL crisis deepens as Parker negotiates club sale

The financial crisis at French basketball club ASVEL is deepening, with reports indicating that representatives of the former Los Angeles Lakers ownership family are in advanced negotiations to purchase the team. The club's financial struggles have led to a significant budget reduction, from a planned 59 million euros down to 24 million euros. This has already resulted in the departure of several notable players, including Sylvain Francisco to Panathinaikos, Armoni Brooks to Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Daniel Theis to Valencia. Nick Weiler-Babb also recently left for Crvena Zvezda.

The primary obstacle in the sale negotiations appears to be the valuation of the club. While some minority shareholders had hoped for a sale price of approximately 120 million euros, ASVEL's current market value is estimated to be between 60 and 80 million euros. Initial expectations were to finalize an agreement with the Buss family by the end of September, but the talks have extended. The new projected timeline for completing the transaction is now by the end of 2026.

For Tony Parker, who leads ASVEL, the situation presents a considerable challenge as he navigates the pre-season. Beyond assembling a significantly altered team roster, Parker must also contend with the uncertainty surrounding the club's future ownership and financial stability. The prolonged negotiations cast a shadow over the team's preparations for the upcoming season.
