At least 20 dead in severe earthquake in Indonesia

A severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 has struck the Flores Island region in eastern Indonesia, resulting in at least 20 fatalities and six injuries, according to local rescue services. Search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts, with fears that two individuals may still be trapped beneath debris.

The earthquake jolted the island early Saturday morning. Initially, reports indicated two deaths, but the toll has since risen significantly. Authorities promptly issued a tsunami alert and ordered the evacuation of coastal communities as a precautionary measure. The tsunami warning was later rescinded.

The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 70 kilometers off the northern coast of Flores Island. The initial tremor was followed by several strong aftershocks, including one measuring 6.1 magnitude. These subsequent tremors heightened concerns about further damage and potential instability.

Indonesia, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is highly susceptible to seismic activity. The region has a history of devastating earthquakes and tsunamis. A catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in 2004 devastated the Aceh province, claiming the lives of 170,000 people in Indonesia alone.
