At least 27 Caracas churches damaged by earthquakes, but none will be demolished

The Archdiocese of Caracas has reported that at least 27 churches in the capital city exhibit structural damage in the aftermath of the June 24 earthquakes. Despite five of these temples showing high-risk structural failures, church authorities have confirmed that none of the buildings will be demolished.

During a press conference, Father Neptalí Balza, a priest and civil engineer leading the inspection team, detailed the condition of religious sites. He stated that five temples have severe structural damage, 16 are under review with moderate damage, and six have been declared completely safe.

Among the affected structures in Caracas, 16 are historical monuments dating back centuries. The Archdiocese is collaborating with the Institute of Cultural Heritage to ensure their preservation, according to Efe. Balza also noted that in the state of La Guaira, one of the areas most impacted by the earthquakes, five to six historically significant churches also suffered considerable damage.

A plan for restoration and structural reinforcement is set to be activated once the evaluation phase concludes. This initiative will involve collaboration with architecture and engineering students and the establishment of a special committee for fundraising.

Bishop José Manuel León highlighted the Venezuelan Church's social response, detailing the distribution of nearly 490 tons of food, clothing, and medicine donated for those affected. He also announced the formation of a health network comprising over 21 specialists in psychology to provide emotional support to victims, emphasizing the ongoing need for basic resources and the strengthening of parish medicine banks.
