At least five dead, 41 missing in ferry fire near Indonesia's Madura Island

A devastating ferry fire in Indonesian waters has claimed at least five lives, with 41 people still missing. The incident occurred on Sunday morning as the vessel, carrying 271 passengers and crew, traveled across the Java Sea from Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, to Makassar in South Sulawesi.

Search and rescue officials reported that 225 individuals had been successfully rescued by Sunday afternoon. However, the operation to find the remaining missing persons is ongoing. Some passengers reportedly escaped the blaze by jumping overboard, where they were picked up by a nearby ship. Four other vessels were on standby but could not approach the burning ferry due to the risk posed by flammable materials onboard, according to officials.

Muhammad Masyhud, a senior official at the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, stated that preliminary reports indicated passengers were awaiting evacuation by nearby vessels. He assured that "the safety of passengers and crew is our top priority" and that authorities were coordinating closely to ensure a swift and effective rescue process. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and the ship's captain has reportedly been out of contact since the incident began.

Marine accidents are a frequent occurrence in Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, often attributed to unpredictable weather and lax safety standards. This latest tragedy follows a similar incident last month where a ferry carrying over 70 people sank near Selayar island, resulting in four confirmed deaths and 14 missing.
