At Least Four Killed in Overnight Russian Missile and Drone Attack on Kyiv

Kyiv began the new school year after an overnight Russian attack killed at least four people in the capital and surrounding areas, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Kyiv’s city authorities said three people died and five were wounded in what they called an enemy attack on the capital. Timur Tkachenko, governor of the Kyiv region, said a business in Boryspil, east of Kyiv, was damaged, killing one person and injuring another. Eight more people were injured after a residential building was hit.

A strong attack by Russian missiles and drones targeted the region again overnight.

Ukraine’s air force had warned residents in Kyiv and the surrounding region about possible ballistic-missile and other attacks, urging them to remain in shelters. Regional authorities said large events should not take place in areas considered to face a high level of risk. Officials also reported overnight attacks in Odesa, Kharkiv, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia regions.

The strikes were accompanied by an incident in Russia’s northwestern Leningrad region. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko said a drone attack damaged the Ust-Luga port on the Baltic Sea and caused a fire. Ust-Luga is one of western Russia’s key oil-export centres, and Ukrainian forces have attacked it several times, according to the report.

The fighting has continued for more than four and a half years. Efforts toward a peaceful settlement, with US mediation, stalled months ago.
