Athens Police Arrest Two Suspected of Defrauding Elderly by Posing as Accountants

Authorities in Athens have dismantled an organized group that preyed on elderly individuals by posing as accountants. Two men, aged 41 and 44, were arrested in connection with the scam, which primarily targeted seniors in the Nea Smyrni and Paleo Faliro areas.

The arrested individuals face charges of belonging to a criminal organization involved in fraud, both completed and attempted, committed professionally and continuously. Police investigations suggest the group began its operations in late March, focusing on elderly pedestrians.

The 41-year-old suspect, believed to be the ringleader, would approach potential victims, introducing himself as an accountant. He would then claim they were owed a tax refund or retroactive pension payments, using this pretext to gain their trust. Subsequently, he would solicit money, jewelry, or other valuables from them.

So far, police have identified five instances of fraud in Nea Smyrni and Paleo Faliro. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full scope of the group's criminal activities. The 44-year-old suspect allegedly played a key role by providing his vehicle for the group's transportation and for approaching victims.

During searches of the suspects' residences, authorities seized three mobile phones and the vehicle used in the operation. Police are continuing their efforts to ascertain if the arrested men are linked to other similar incidents.
