Atiku Abubakar Meets UK High Commissioner

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar held discussions with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, and other senior British diplomatic officials on Thursday. The meeting, disclosed by Atiku's aide Kenneth Okonkwo, centered on "current affairs in Nigeria."

While specific details of the engagement were not revealed, Okonkwo mentioned that Montgomery was accompanied by Lucy Green, Head of Political Section, and Thomas Simpson, Second Secretary Political. Images from the meeting showed Atiku Abubakar in traditional attire engaging in formal greetings with the diplomats, with Nigerian flags present in the setting.

The meeting takes place as the British High Commission actively engages with Nigerian political figures and electoral officials in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. In April 2026, the UK High Commission had announced similar visits by Montgomery and Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever to political leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

These prior engagements were focused on developments within Nigeria's political and democratic processes. During those visits, officials met with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, as well as 2023 presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, and INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan. The stated aim was to support "inclusive & credible elections."
