Atiku's subsidy proposal aims to make petrol affordable, says campaign spokesperson

Kenneth Okonkwo, a key spokesperson for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar's 2027 presidential campaign, has pushed back against criticism of Abubakar's plan to reintroduce a petrol subsidy if elected. Okonkwo asserted that the proposal is fundamentally aimed at making fuel more affordable for Nigerians.

Speaking on Channels Television, Okonkwo clarified that Abubakar's proposed subsidy is not a return to the previous subsidy regime, which was characterized by inefficiencies and alleged corruption. He emphasized that the core objective of the current proposal is to lower the price of petrol at the pump for consumers.

Despite facing scrutiny and opposition, Okonkwo maintained that the plan is a strategic move designed to alleviate the financial burden on citizens struggling with high fuel costs. He suggested that the focus should be on the intended outcome of reduced prices rather than the label of 'subsidy' itself.
