Aughagower in Co Mayo prepares to welcome Canadian PM

The village of Aughagower in Co Mayo is preparing for a significant visit from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is set to travel to the homeplace of his paternal grandparents on Sunday. This visit is a highlight of his two-day trip to Ireland, which also includes engagements in Dublin.

Carney's grandparents, Robert Carney and Nora Moran, originated from Aughagower before emigrating to North America in July 1925. They married in Canada and raised three sons. During his time in Aughagower, the Prime Minister is expected to attend mass at the local parish church and pay respects at the cemetery where some of his ancestors are buried.

In anticipation of the visit, the community has undertaken extensive efforts to research and showcase the Carney and Moran family heritage. This research is featured in a display at the local community center and will be compiled into a commemorative booklet to be presented to Carney. Michael Heraty of the Aughagower Development Company emphasized the visit's significance, drawing parallels to the historical connections between New Ross and Ballina with former US Presidents Kennedy and Biden.

The invitation to Mr. Carney was the result of a dedicated campaign by the village, intensifying after his election as Prime Minister in March of the previous year. He is expected to arrive at Ireland West Airport on Sunday, proceeding to Westport for various engagements before attending a civic reception hosted by Mayo County Council. The community's welcome is encapsulated in a Gaelic proverb from their booklet: "An áit a bhfuil do chroí, is ann a thabharfas do chosa thú" – "Your feet will lead you to where your heart is."
