Australia Post worker charged over alleged mail tampering in Perth

An Australia Post mail sorter faces charges of tampering with mail after allegedly removing and altering packages during his overnight shifts. The 57-year-old man was arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) following an investigation into suspected thefts from a sorting facility in Perth's southern suburbs.

Australian Federal Police officers reviewed CCTV footage which reportedly linked the loss of packages to the man's work patterns. The alleged tampering and removal of items occurred on June 2 and 3. Following the arrest, a search of the man's home and vehicle in Armadale resulted in the seizure of $34,000 in cash.

The mail sorter is due to appear in court today, facing two counts of tampering with mail receptacles. Each offense carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment. The AFP stated that investigations are ongoing into further suspected instances of stolen and tampered packages.

AFP Detective Acting Inspector David Blockley emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting the agency's commitment to working with businesses to bring trusted insiders who abuse their positions to justice.
