Austrian Fortress Becomes Luxury Hotel on Montenegro's Private Island

Montenegro's stunning geography is fostering the development of exclusive, discreet resorts, offering tranquility and privacy to guests. A prime example of this trend is the private island of Mamula, situated in the picturesque Bay of Kotor.

Singaporean hospitality firm Banyan Group acquired the island and, after a year-long revitalization, opened the five-star Mamula Island by Banyan Tree hotel in 2023. This transformation of a historic 19th-century Austrian fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, involved careful restoration by conservationists to preserve its heritage while creating a luxury destination.

The island, located between the Prevlaka and Luštica peninsulas, offers 32 luxurious rooms and suites. Some accommodations within the historic fortress retain original stone carvings and decorations. The Heritage Sky Suites, featuring century-old frescoes, floor-to-ceiling windows, private sea-view terraces, custom furniture, and local art, have even received international recognition, being named among the world's ten most beautiful hotel rooms at the AHEAD Awards Europe.

Guests at Mamula Island can enjoy panoramic views from public terraces, access a private beach, and relax by one of the three outdoor pools. The hotel also features a spa located in the central tower of the former fortress, offering amenities such as saunas.
