Cinematographer Witold Płóciennik Found Dead After Disappearance

The search for Witold Płóciennik ended with the discovery of the respected Polish cinematographer’s body in Lubusz province. Prosecutors confirmed that the remains found during the operation belonged to the missing filmmaker.

Płóciennik disappeared on August 29 in Lubniewice. He had traveled there to rest near the water and was last seen in the area around Lake Lubniewsko. Police in Sulęcin had appealed for help in determining his whereabouts.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Martyna Litka said officers had found a man’s body and that procedural work was continuing under a prosecutor’s supervision. Mariola Wojciechowska-Grześkowiak, a spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gorzów Wielkopolski, later confirmed that the body was found during the search for Płóciennik.

A graduate of the Łódź Film School and a member of the Polish Society of Cinematographers, Płóciennik received an award in 2019 for his cinematography on “Icarus. The Legend of Mietek Kosz.” The following year, he won the main prize in the Polish Films Competition at the Camerimage festival for “Zieja.”

His credits included “Wymyk,” “Carte Blanche,” “Behind the Blue Door,” “Like Dog and Cat,” “The Champion,” “A Simple Story About Murder” and “Feast of Fire.” He also worked on the series “The Winnners,” “The Raven,” “The Chord,” “Go Ahead, Brother” and Netflix’s “Lead Children,” as well as music videos for Hey and O.N.A.
